Each of the items below is a series of 8 programs on various topics in classical music
The Classical Music DJ is no different from any old-time 50's and 60's rock n’ roll DJ – the focus is the top 40 hits of the day! But when you look at the top 40 hits of classical music you have to divide it up by composer. There are 8 programs in this group, one for each of 7 well-known composers, each with 5 great hits, and one for the 5 composers who are one-hit wonders. These 40 hits are still tops today. So hey baby, let's “roll over Beethoven and tell Tchaikovsky (and others) the news.”
This series of 8 programs is about that beautiful musical form, the symphony, and its place in the orchestral music repertoire. Symphonies started as relatively short, simple works but they quickly developed into the most expressive of musical formats as all members of the orchestra play an important role during a symphonic performance. The programs include biographical information on the great composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Dvorak, Berlioz, Shostakovich, and others.
Classical music can mean many different things. It includes genres such as symphonies, piano concertos, concertos for the violin and other instruments as well, string ensembles, sonatas, and opera. No arcane discussion of musical techniques, just some discussion of the composer’s background or the music itself, and presentations of some of the best examples of each genre, through a series of 8 programs. The 8 programs will shed some light on what we understand to be “classical music”.
